R.V. Celtic Mist

Celtic Mist is Irelands newest marine research vessel. The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group were donated the yacht in 2011. The gift was in recognition of the work of the IWDG over the last 20 years. The Celtic Mist is a fantastic resource for both IWDG members and other groups and individuals with an interest in the sea.

The IWDG intend to use the Celtic Mist to train and teach IWDG members how to survey and record whales and dolphins, including using acoustic survey techniques. It will also be used for dedicated research projects and professional training and development. We intend to encourage schools and young people to visit the yacht to learn about whales and dolphins and the rich marine life in Ireland and to promote marine conservation.

Celtic Mist is a 56ft steel hulled ketch. It was built in 1974 by Custo in Brittany, France and  designed by Dominique Presles.

It has a 350 HP diesel Caterpillar engine giving it a maximum speed of 8.5 knots and a cruising speed of 6 knots.  Berths 8 people with excellent facilities including a large galley and chart/navigation area
